“Pilates exercises can be helpful during pregnancy and after childbirth to restore abdominal-muscle strength and to realign posture.” ~ Harvard Women's Health Watch, Harvard Medical School, January '99

“Lisa, I truly do have you to thank for my great pregnancy. You helped keep my body and mind in great shape.” ~ Suzanne W.

There are many things to think about when bringing a baby into the world and, increasingly, fitness is part of the equation. A strong, healthy body unquestionably improves the health of both the mother and the baby, decreases delivery and recovery time, and can help you lose the extra fat a little faster. Below are some suggestions if you're thinking about having a child or have recently brought a little one into the world.

Pre-Partum

Now is the time to get your body in shape for pregnancy and delivery. Increasing abdominal strength will help with delivery, while increasing back strength will help your body carry the extra 20 to 30 pounds in your belly. If you've been sedentary, you want to give your body time to get used to movement and improve strength before you become pregnant.

Pregnancy

Modern Pilates works with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology guidelines, as well as specific instructions from your own OB, to provide you with the safest and healthiest pregnancy possible. We will accept pregnant clients, even those who are sedentary, only with a doctor's note that specifically prescribes Pilates. Every pregnancy is different but Modern Pilates will work at improving back strength as your abdominals elongate, introduce Kegel exercises, and help you relax and get an hour of quiet time while you prepare for your new addition. Each workout is individually tailored to that day, so you only do what is right for you at the time, whether it's gentle stretching and relaxation or work on the support muscles of your spine.

Post-Partum

Now you can turn on the heat again (with your doctor's blessing). Once baby and Mom have safely cleared the initial post-partum hurdles, you can begin to increase your stamina, recover your tummy and get back to your pre-baby jeans. Modern Pilates again custom-tailors your workout to adapt to your body as it recovers from pregnancy.
